A science and music workshop for young people
This unique workshop offers a fascinating exploration at the intersection of science and music. Drawing on the work of famous astrophysicists such as Hubert Reeves and Carl Sagan, participants will discover our deep connection with the universe through the poetic concept of stardust – the idea that all the atoms in our bodies come from stars that died billions of years ago.
During this event, astronomy enthusiast Jean-François Janvier-Houde will guide adolescents in the discovery of celestial wonders such as nebulae, the clouds of gas and dust where stars are born and die. Emphasis will be placed on the importance of the scientific spirit, the approach that drives us to seek answers while accepting uncertainty.
The children will be encouraged to cultivate a critical mind and understand the value of doubt in the scientific process. Rather than being a source of anxiety, this uncertainty is presented as an invitation to intellectual curiosity – a natural antidote to anxiety that opens us up to the world.
At the same time, Valérie Milot will offer musical interludes on the harp, an age-old instrument that bears witness to human evolution. Her performances aim to illustrate how art and science represent two different but complementary languages for describing our reality. The harp, which appeared late in cosmic history, symbolizes humanity’s place in this immense universe.
The students will not be mere spectators: they will be invited to exchange their impressions, ask questions and share their thoughts. With a focus on interdisciplinary connections between music and astronomy, the activity also incorporates related subjects such as English, physics, mathematics, and the arts, drawing on a comprehensive and user-friendly pedagogical guide.
This enriching experience, co-led by Valérie Milot and Jean-François Janvier-Houde, aims to foster in its participants both artistic sensitivity and scientific thinking—two essential aspects for understanding the world in all its complexity and beauty.
Anémone 47 is an organization whose mission is to provide equitable access to music. The organization pursues this mission through several initiatives, including education, notably by offering school workshops and concerts for children in schools. To date, Anémone 47 has offered more than 300 school workshops as well as numerous concerts across Quebec, and is currently expanding its programs across Canada.
